This is a reasonable age to start simple, concrete lessons: what AI is in plain terms, that it can make confident mistakes, and a few basic safety habits. Keep it as far from technical vocabulary as possible — games, stories, and clear examples land better here than any explanation involving how the technology actually works.
Kids this age can start handling real nuance: why AI gets things wrong sometimes, what it means that it was trained on existing information instead of "knowing" things the way a person does, and basic ideas about privacy and what shouldn't be typed into a chat. This is also a sensible age to introduce prompting — how the way you ask something changes the answer you get.

One offhand comment on a school night does more over three years than a single sit-down lesson does in one afternoon, because the habit needs repetition to become automatic, and a kid won't reliably apply a rule they heard exactly once under pressure.
Parents modeling their own AI use matters too. If your kid sees you say "I asked it to help me draft this, and then I checked it myself," they absorb that habit well before they could explain it back to you. Kids notice what adults actually do far more than what adults tell them to do — a household where AI use is visible and narrated out loud teaches the skill passively, the same way kids pick up how to have a phone conversation or handle a disagreement by watching it happen around them long before anyone explains the rules.
A 12-year-old who's had zero structured conversation about AI isn't behind in some unrecoverable way — they just start the habit now instead of at 8. The habit matters more than the starting line: what counts is that it begins and keeps happening, not the exact age on the calendar when it did.
